Physiotherapy for teenagers

Physiotherapy for teenagers can help keep your teens healthy and injury free. Tricky teens are no problem for our team at Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy.  We’re confident we can keep our growing teens active and help them throughout their physical development.

Because many teenagers lead such active and energetic lives, it’s common for them to develop a strain or injure themselves. Sometimes we forget our bodies are still growing! It is easy to push our body beyond its limits. So when does your teenager need physiotherapy?  If you have pain it is important to be assessed by a physiotherapist as soon as they present to avoid further injuries.

What Injuries are Common in Adolescents?

Is Strength & Conditioning Important for Adolescents?

A 2015 study found only 1/3 of children reached the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day(Sports Medicine Australia, 2017).

Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines recommend children and adolescence participate in muscle and bone strengthening activities at least 3 days per week. Strength and conditioning programs can provide a lifelong form of enjoyable fitness, confidence in the gym, and many health benefits.

Recent research has shown a link between late adolescence muscle strength and the risk of developing chronic disease well as premature mortality (2). Good adolescent strength can decrease the risk of suicide-related death by 30% and the risk of having a psychiatric diagnosis later in life by 65% (2). Stronger youths are more likely to have stronger bones, higher self-esteem, and are less likely to be obese (2). Resistance training can also reduce the risk of a sports-related injury in adolescents (2). Despite this growing body of evidence, muscular fitness in children and adolescents continue to decline worldwide.

Attitudes towards resistance training in children and adolescents continues to be quite negative. Many feel it is an unsuitable activity for children, with unnecessary risk for injury and stunting their growth. Unfortunately, these beliefs are not based on recent research. Current evidence states that appropriately supervised programs are safe and do not hinder growth and development in adolescents (2). Injury during adolescent strength classes is usually due to misuse of equipment, inappropriate weight, poor technique, and lack of qualified supervision (1).

Pivotal Motion Adolescent Strength & Conditioning Classes

At Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy, we know adolescents can safely improve their strength and overall health by participating in a well supervised program.

Our adolescent strength & conditioning classes classes will give adolescents a good understanding of the basics of strength and conditioning and how to be safe and effective with training. We will teach correct technique for all fundamental strength exercises such as the squat, dead lift, and push up, as well as an introduction to stretching, plyometrics, and proprioception. Classes run year-round on Monday evenings, with expanded classes during school holidays.
