Physiotherapy for teenagers

Tricky teens are no problem for our team at Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy.  We’re confident we can keep our growing teens active and help them throughout their physical development.

Because many teenagers lead such active and energetic lives, it’s not uncommon for them to develop a strain or injure themselves.

When we are young we always feel healthy and energetic. But we forget our bodies are still growing! It is easy to push our bodies to or sometime beyond its limit. Like adults, adolescents can develop overuse injuries from repetitive activity or inactivity. So when does your teenager need physiotherapy?  If you have pain it is important to be assessed by a physiotherapist as soon as they present to avoid further injuries.

There are many common injuries specific to adolescents:

  • Achilles Tendonitis or Tendinitis (pain at the back of the ankle)
  • Anterior Ankle Impingement (pain at the front of the ankle)
  • Knee Bursitis (Inflammation of the knee Bursa inside the knee)
  • Compartment Syndrome (excessive blood pressure within the arm or leg after an injury)
  • Femoroacetabular impingement (pain at the front of the hip)
  • Gluteal Tendinopathy (common cause of Greater Trochanteric Hip Pain Syndrome-or pain at the side of hip)
  • Greater Trochanteric Hip Pain Syndrome
  • High Ankle Sprain (sprain of the syndesmosis that connects the tibia and fibula bones together in the lower leg)
  • Hip Labral tear (damage to the cartilage surrounding the immediate hip joint)
  • Pes Planus (flat arch of foot) can cause:
    • Tibialis posterior tendinopathy (excessive load on this arch stabilising muscle)
    • Plantar fasciotomy (excessive load on the plantar fascia supporting the arch of the foot)
    • Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome “Shin Splints” (excessive foot pronation causes lower leg muscles to apply altered force to the tibia bone)
    • Achilles Tendinopathy (abnormal loads to the inner aspect of the tendon due to excessive rolling in of the foot)
    • Patellofemoral pain syndrome (the rotational change of the ankle impedes the optimal movement of the kneecap causing pain at the front of the knee)
  • Plica Syndrome (synovial membrane on the inner knee that flicks over the medial epicondyle of the tibial bone)
  • Posterior Ankle Impingement (pain at the back of the ankle, common in ballet dancers, gymnasts, and footballers)
  • Retrocalcaneal bursitis (inflammation of the bursa at the back of the ankle)
  • Severs Disease (inflammation of the growth plate in the heel of children and adolescents)
  • Traction Apophysitis
  • Spondylolysis (stress fracture of the lumber spine)
  • Sprained Ankle (over stretching of ankle ligaments commonly after rolling ankle)
  • Stress Fractures of the foot (compression of the Tibial Nerve as it travels through the Tarsal Tunnel)
  • Hypermobility.

Growth related injuries often occur at the hip, knee or ankle; presenting as pain with activity. Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy are experts at identifying adolescent condition and provide the correct treatment and rehabilitation to return you to your best.

Adolescent Strength & Conditioning Classes

At Pivotal Motion, we understand that Adolescents can successfully and safely improve their strength and overall health by participating in a well supervised program. A study published in Sports Health (Strength Training in Children and Adolescents) found that injuries related to strength training, including epiphyseal plate fractures, and lower back injuries are primarily attributed to misuse of equipment, inappropriate weight, improper technique, or lack of qualified adult supervision. Our Physiotherapists are experts in strength training and play an essential role in ensuring proper technique,  form, progression of exercise, equipment use, and safety in this age group..  Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy, located in Newmarket Village Shopping Centre, conducts small specialised classes for teenagers on Monday afternoons at 4.15pm for the gents and 5pm for the ladies.
